So, what is Wolves and Brioches about?



Two days ago, I shared the cover of my novel Wolves and Brioches, which will be available in paperback and Kindle format on December 1. 

Now, here's a look at the back cover of the paperback version -- but first, here's what Wolves and Brioches is about:

Paris, 1765. When Odette de l’Estoile breaks into her uncle’s library, she meets an elegantly dressed wolf sitting in an armchair and reading a book. They quickly become best friends.

 

Louis is no ordinary wolf, as you might have guessed. But unlike the rest of his family, he doesn’t take joy in tricking anyone and he doesn’t particularly cherish his ancestors’ exploits involving three pigs or a girl in a red cape.

 

Odette doesn’t have an easy life with her family, either. Powerful magicians, the de l’Estoiles generally sneer at her, since she’s only half magic, not to mention entirely forbidden from learning any spells.

 

Still, the two friends find plenty to enjoy in Paris, including theater-going, soirées with some of the greatest minds of the Enlightenment, clandestine spell-casting, and the occasional necessary robbery.

 

But as time goes on, another strange wolf comes into their lives. The legendary Beast of Gévaudan is responsible for killing nearly a hundred innocent people deep in the French countryside. When an evil magician plans to use the creature to change the world (and not for the better), Odette and Louis find themselves unexpectedly caught up in the plot.

 

They may, in fact, be the only ones who can stop him.

Strange Paris history bonus: Marat’s bathtub

A Siege souvenir’s surprising tie to four generations of one family

There are many things I’m a bit obsessed with. These include cats, books, and Siege of Paris bread souvenirs. As the Siege continued over the months of fall, 1870, white flour became scarce and Parisian bakeries had to get (desperately) creative in order to keep making bread for a population for whom it was a staple. Siege bread became notorious for its unpleasant texture, hardness, and dubious ingredients, including crushed peas and, most notoriously, straw.   Jules Ferry, who was Prefect of the Seine during the Siege, and in charge of things like rationing and provisions, allegedly once lamented “ Jamais les Parisiens ne me pardonneront de leur avoir fait manger un ignoble pain.”  (“The Parisians will never forgive me for having made them eat vile bread.”) And he had a point; Siege bread was sometimes referred to as pain Ferry  (Ferry bread).   On the plus side, it’s because Siege bread was so notoriously horrible (and so easy to preserve, ...
