My new novel is almost here!


A few years ago, I announced that I was working on another novel. Now, it's nearly here!

I'm celebrating the news with a first look at the cover, created by talented and endlessly patient artist Luisa G.

Unlike Hearts at Dawn, not to mention most of the posts on this blog, Wolves and Brioches doesn't take place during the 1870-1871, Siege of Paris, but rather a little more than a hundred years before that. This time, our story is set in 1764-1767. This novel also has a more lighthearted tone than Hearts at Dawn. 

But there are still some similarities. It's also a historical fantasy tale, and it involves unconventional characters finding themselves, and each other. 

Also on the menu are friendship, magic, and mouthwatering pastries.

Wolves and Brioches will be published in paperback and Kindle formats on December 1. The Kindle version will be available for pre-order a few days before that.

I'll be back soon to reveal more -- including just what Wolves and Brioches is about.

Soon after the Siege of Paris ended on January 28, 1871, many enterprising souls started selling souvenirs.   Most of these were things you’d expect: memoirs, photo albums of ruins, postcards, commemorative medallions and such.   In fact, even during the Siege itself, a number of people sold what they claimed were souvenirs from the battlefields, including Prussian helmets. Some of these helmets may have been real, but in his amazing book, La vie à Paris pendant le siège 1870-1871 , Victor Debuchy includes an account of a secret manufacturer of fake ones. Fragments of shells from bombed buildings were also a commonly sold souvenir. Strange Paris history bonus: Marat’s bathtub

  With a mix of emotions, Charlotte Corday watches Jean-Paul Marat die in his bath from the stab wound she's just inflicted on him. A few days ago, I saw something so extraordinary from that time that I have to write about it! It all started at the Musée Grévin, the Parisian equivalent of Madame Tussaud’s. A Siege souvenir’s surprising tie to four generations of one family

There are many things I’m a bit obsessed with. These include cats, books, and Siege of Paris bread souvenirs. As the Siege continued over the months of fall, 1870, white flour became scarce and Parisian bakeries had to get (desperately) creative in order to keep making bread for a population for whom it was a staple. Siege bread became notorious for its unpleasant texture, hardness, and dubious ingredients, including crushed peas and, most notoriously, straw.   Jules Ferry, who was Prefect of the Seine during the Siege, and in charge of things like rationing and provisions, allegedly once lamented “ Jamais les Parisiens ne me pardonneront de leur avoir fait manger un ignoble pain.”  (“The Parisians will never forgive me for having made them eat vile bread.”) And he had a point; Siege bread was sometimes referred to as pain Ferry  (Ferry bread).   On the plus side, it’s because Siege bread was so notoriously horrible (and so easy to preserve, ...
